Since the EPA has asked Dupont to halt using PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) which is being found in the bloodstream of many people AND which poses a potential health risk, what are some alternatives to a teflon coating, especially when frying meat?

I burned a teflon pan not to the point of seeing smoke but where it was hot enough to boil the water to nothing and a small amout of residue (white) was left!!!! and a strange smell coming from the pan? Is the 15 dangerous toxic chemicals that are emitted from the pan that I burnt enough to be concerned or did I have to see smoke to suggest the release of chemicals??

The one I have has teflon which has come off and everything sticks to it. Plus I am aware of the health hazards that teflon yields when heated, so want to keep away from it. Any ideas? Hopefully something avail in the UK as well – or can be shipped to UK. I see there is one that sits on a hob top with titanium coating (Diablo toaster from iwantoneofthose.com) – any ideas on titanium’s health implications?

Teflon, also known polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) itself is relatively inert.
If heated hot enough, though(several hundred degrees), it can decompose and give off some potentially nasty and unhealthy gases. I don’t know right off the top of my head what these would be, but I know that certain species of pet birds are especially sensitive to them.
This hazard can generally be avoided, though, by not heating teflon cookware when empty.horde leveling guide

It really depends, studies have shown that it can pose health risks… If you have teflon coated pan/pots and they are warn down so that the teflon is flaking off, replace them. If you have good quality teflon pans you should have nothing to worry about, just make sure you keep them in good condition so that the coating isn’t flaking off into your food. In the future get iron pans, nothing with a coating that will flake off. Best Wishes
