What Do You Think About This Scenario Of Toxic Fume Inhalation?

My bro put a teflon or plastic spatula in the top rack of a load of dishes in the dishwasher. Well, during the rinse sequence the spatula apparently fell into the very bottom. When the heated dry sequence initiated, the heating pad was in contact with the spatula and melted it. When my brother opened the dishwasher he was bombarded by stinky chemical smelling steam – fumes. Now (a few hours later) he has a chemical taste in his mouth and nausea – and exhaustion. He’s feeling a little better and drove over here – but does this thing happen often and could it ever be life-threatening or carry serious health implications??

It does happen often. If it was that dangerous they wouldn’t allow it in people’s homes. People leave those spatulas on top of the stove, in the oven and in dishwashers.
I think your brother is being a bit precious.
He’ll be fine in the morning.

This does in reality happen all of the time…I myself actually experienced this. While I would never think to give you medical advice, I would tell you that the symptoms faded withing a couple of hours… I assume it depends how long he was exposed. I would seriously think about a doctor if the symptoms are still apparent after he took the time to drive to your home..

Put some air-filtering plants in the kitchen and you’re good to go.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_air…
